University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre

About

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre is the biggest medical school in the University of Texas system as a public health science centre in Dallas. The university follows a three-part mission; educating leaders in the field, conducting research and treating patients.

The university is spread over 230 acres with a South and North campus. The South has several research towers and an energy plant, while the North campus also has a number of buildings, including a BioCentre and the Paul M. Bass Administrative and Clinical Centre. Both are connected with an elevated campus connector. Including all administrative, clinical, and educational buildings and laboratories, the total space under the university goes up to 387 acres.

The 3,692 academic staff includes 7 Nobel Laureates and 26 members of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

It has an endowment of over US$1.82 billion and a budget of US$3.4 billion. It is comprised of three institutions; UT Southwestern Medical School, UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and UT Southwestern School of Health Professions.

Students

This university admits approximately 230 students yearly and has around 2,235 students. There are an additional 3,255 postgraduates.

The average acceptance rate is 7.7%, while the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) has a 15% rate for those aiming for an MD or PhD.

Annually, the university trains around 3,700 medical professionals on all levels.

Accommodations

The institute has campus housing that gives priority to students in degree-granting programs, known as the Southwestern Medical Park Apartments.

There are 282 units in total, with 120 being two-bedroom and two-bathroom units and 162 one-bedroom and one-bathroom units. There are several facilities, including central air and heat, basic cable, washers and dryers, kitchen appliances, ceiling fans and an alarm system.

The community also has a leasing centre with a public safety officer outside around the clock, along with a fitness centre, clubhouse, gazebo, pool and shuttle service that transports students to the university campus.

However, the apartments are unfurnished with no pets allowed, and students must pay all utility bills.
