New Zealand's new policy allows visitors to work from home. Officials anticipated an increase in tourists and tourism-related income, but visa applications have decreased instead.
In late January, New Zealand introduced a policy permitting visitors with an electronic travel authority (ETA) or visiting visa to work from home. The aim was to attract IT experts, who could "stay and play" while working.
However, according to Immigration New Zealand (INZ), the number of applications for visiting visas has decreased. Applications decreased by 23,654, even though INZ's website saw over 50,000 more views of its visitor visa and ETA pages in the last two weeks than it did the previous year.
Officials think the Lunar New Year's timing was a factor. There are fewer visa applications following the vacation because many travellers have applied for them before.
"As many people obtain their visas in advance, it is typical to see lower application numbers during this period," said Jock Gilray, the director of visas for INZ.
Visitors, even those visiting relatives, are permitted to work remotely for foreign businesses under the regulation. Writing reports, coding, software testing, responding to emails, participating in virtual meetings, and producing content for social media are all acceptable duties.
Erica Stanford, the minister of immigration, stressed that the strategy attracted international attention. She thinks it will entice travellers to spend more money and stay longer.
If a big number of remote workers arrive, some MPs expressed concern about possible housing shortages. Others questioned whether or not the strategy would draw in a large number of digital nomads.
The move was deemed practical by the Association for Migration and Investment. They did point out that it's still unknown if it will result in a significant rise in travel.
The Lunar New Year's earlier date is one important contributing reason. There are fewer applications following the holiday because many travellers apply before. Other elements might also be involved, such as financial worries and other places for digital nomads to go.
You can remain for up to nine months with a regular visiting visa. However, the applicant's country of origin and the terms of the visa determine eligibility.
The Immigration New Zealand website is where travellers can submit an online application. They must provide proof of cash and return travel plans, among other normal requirements for guest visas.
