IRCC Reports Progress in Reducing Immigration Backlog

Canada

#immigration

IRCC's backlog has dropped to 821,200 as of February 28, a 7.95% decrease from the previous month. This marks the third month below one million. Permanent resident applications saw a backlog of 364,000, with Express Entry backlog rising to 25%.

Temporary resident applications had 414,500 in backlog, with visitor visas most affected. Citizenship applications had the smallest backlog at 18%. IRCC credits automation, application caps, and lower immigration targets for improvements.

The work permit backlog is decreasing, showing prioritization. Despite progress, some categories exceed targets, especially Express Entry and visitor visas. IRCC aims to process 80% on time.

Afghan migrants in Pakistan have urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to stop deportations and ease visa rules. They called for protection for those with pending U.S. visas or refugee applications in an open letter.

Pakistan has set a March 31 deadline for Afghan Citizen Card holders to leave, while UNHCR-registered refugees can stay until June 30. The letter warns that deportations could disrupt legal immigration cases.

Migrants also face high visa extension costs and fines. They seek exemptions from detention and a smoother exit process. The group says forced removals would violate humanitarian principles and international agreements.

Canada has raised the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) cap to 25,000 applications for 2025. Some will be from the 2024 intake, while others will come from 2025. This is a shift from the earlier plan to accept only 15,000 applications.

The PGP allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor parents and grandparents for permanent residence. The selection is lottery-based, with invitations sent to those who applied in 2020.

The Super Visa program offers an alternative, allowing long-term visits of up to five years, with a 10-year validity and possible extensions.
