30,000 Foreigners Reside in Bangladesh with Expired Visas Amid Stricter Penalties
Bangladesh
#illegal
#residence
Over 30,000 foreigners from India and China are staying in Bangladesh with expired visas. Indians form the largest group, with 27,000 overstaying. Chinese nationals rank second, with 40% of their visas expired.
Recent changes increased penalties for expired visas ranging from Tk 1,000 to Tk 3,000 daily. Exemptions apply to dual nationals and some students. Authorities blame weak legal frameworks and databases for enforcement issues.
Many overstayers are linked to crimes like smuggling and fraud. The government plans stricter actions, penalizing employers and universities for failing to report expired visas. Legal measures under the Foreigners Act, of 1964, are being strengthened.

Norway Proposes Stricter Language Rules for Permanent Residency
Norway
#permanentresidence
Norway plans to raise its language requirement for permanent residency applicants from A1 to A2 proficiency in Norwegian. The proposal, by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, aims to enhance integration and ensure controlled immigration.
Language and civics requirements will move from integration to immigration regulations for streamlined processing. Non-EU/EEA migrants and those under temporary protection must also meet these rules.
A consultation on the proposal ends on February 18, 2025. Other recent migration changes include hiring more refugees and limiting family reunification for single parents over 60. The government continues to refine its immigration policies.

UK Visa Income Rules Separate Families, Charities Call for Change
United Kingdom
#familyvisa
#policy
Thousands of children in the UK face separation from their parents due to strict visa income rules. British citizens must earn £29,000 annually to sponsor a non-UK spouse.
The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) is reviewing plans to increase this to £38,700 by 2025. Research by Reunite Families UK highlights the harm to children, with 85% citing income rules as a barrier. Families face poverty, isolation, and mental health struggles.
Examples include a father separated from his Tanzanian partner and baby, and a mother alone in the UK while her family remains in South Africa. Charities urge the MAC to revise these “cruel” policies.

Colombian Care Workers in Germany Avoid Deportation Amid Immigration Challenges
Colombia
Germany
#workvisa
#healthcare
Ten Colombian caregivers in Germany were at risk of deportation due to their rejected asylum applications. They now have temporary training contracts, allowing them to stay. The case highlights Germany's struggles with labour shortages and immigration rules.
Public outrage and political support, including a petition with 83,782 signatures, saved the workers. German officials stress that skilled worker immigration, not asylum, is the proper route. Colombia and Germany are working on migration agreements to prevent such issues.
Currently, 14,000 Colombians contribute to Germany’s workforce. Authorities aim to curb unauthorized migration and ensure a more effective system for foreign workers.
