Syrian Ex-Officer in U.S. Indicted for Torture and Immigration Fraud

Former Syrian official Samir Ousman Alsheikh, 72, was indicted in Los Angeles on torture and immigration fraud charges. Alsheikh, who entered the U.S. in 2020 on a fraudulent visa, allegedly committed torture while overseeing Damascus Central Prison under the Assad regime.

He reportedly ordered and participated in severe abuse of prisoners, including the use of brutal methods like the "Flying Carpet."

IRCC Extends Open Work Permits for TR to PR Pathway Applicants Until 2026

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended its policy for TR to PR pathway applicants, allowing longer open work permits (OWPs) until December 31, 2026. This extension applies to eligible spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children.

The TR to PR pathway closed in 2021, enabling essential workers and recent graduates to apply for PR. Applicants with ongoing PR applications and valid Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) can benefit.

Eligibility includes valid language test results, authorized work status, and temporary resident status. Family members must meet specific criteria. Application fees apply, but open-work permit holder fees are waived.
