Biden Administration to Shield 300,000 Haitians From Deportation
United kingdom, United state
The Biden administration plans to protect around 300,000 Haitians from deportation and allow them to work. Haitians arriving between November 2022 and early June will be eligible for temporary protected status (TPS).
This move follows other recent immigration actions by Biden, including aiding undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens and blocking southern border asylum claims. Despite the TPS protections, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has continued deportations to Haiti.
Violence and instability in Haiti, including the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and gang control, have led to calls for extending protections and halting deportations.
