British journalist Sami Hamdi is set to be released from US immigration detention after being held for two weeks, his family confirmed. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Hamdi during his US speaking tour for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
The State Department had accused him of supporting terrorism, but his lawyers say he was targeted for criticising Israel’s war in Gaza. Hamdi’s visa was reportedly revoked without notice.
Under the new agreement, he will return to the UK voluntarily, rather than facing deportation. CAIR said the case exposed political bias, calling his detention unjustified. His family expressed relief but condemned the damage to his reputation.
