Canada has closed the Student Direct Stream (SDS) to ensure fairer study permit processing for all international students. This marks a shift in the country’s approach to managing international student intake with additional new regulations.

For 2024-2025, a cap on study permits will reduce student admissions by 35%, affecting post-graduation work permits and spousal work permit eligibility. Financial requirements have increased, with a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) rising to $20,635.

This may limit access for students from lower-income countries. The changes, though challenging, aim to improve housing, class sizes, and infrastructure. Institutions, however, may face financial strain from reduced international tuition.

Kazakhstan has introduced updated visa rules to attract foreign talent and promote tourism.

Key visas include the “B9” Visa, designed for skilled professionals and able to lead to residency; a Digital Nomad Visa for IT specialists, available in both electronic and multiple-entry formats; and a Neo Nomad Visa, offering extended stays for tourists with a minimum verified monthly income of $3,000.

Additionally, business visa requirements have been simplified, and family reunification now requires only one year of marriage instead of three. The changes aim to boost investment, attract qualified professionals, and enhance Kazakhstan’s global appeal.

UK universities are struggling financially as stricter immigration policies reduce the number of international students. Overseas student visa applications dropped by 5% last year and 16% during July and August, impacting schools that depend on higher tuition fees from these students.

Brexit further strained this situation, leading to a sharp decline in EU student numbers. Universities UK highlighted that funding per student is at its lowest since 2004, with institutions like Coventry University significantly affected. Some students now choose Canada, Australia, or the Netherlands as study destinations.
