Canada Suspends New Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Applications for 2025

Canada

Canada will not accept new applications under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2025. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will process up to 15,000 applications submitted in 2024.

Canadians can still use the super visa to bring parents and grandparents for visits lasting up to five years. Using a lottery system, the PGP lets citizens and permanent residents sponsor families for permanent residency.

IRCC reduced its 2025 permanent resident target by 20%, cutting PGP allocations to 24,500 landings. The Immigration Levels Plan, revised annually, outlines these targets while now including projections for temporary residents.

Tories' Immigration Plan Unlikely to Impact Hongkongers on BN(O) Visa

United Kingdom

#immigration

The UK Conservative Party proposed stricter immigration rules, extending the residency period for indefinite leave from five to ten years. Hongkongers on the BN(O) visa fear uncertainty, but analysts say they should not worry.

A party insider reassured that support for Hong Kong migrants remains unchanged. Experts believe the proposal is political rhetoric and unlikely to pass. Some immigration consultants warn it may weaken confidence in the UK's commitment.

Critics argue that the move is financially motivated. Under the scheme, over 158,000 Hongkongers have arrived in the UK. Despite policy debates, many still see Britain as a viable option.

UK's Tougher Immigration Laws Trap Modern Slavery Victims

United Kingdom

#immigration

#deport

Britain's crackdown on illegal migration is harming modern slavery victims. The 2015 Modern Slavery Act once led global efforts. But new rules in 2023 raised the proof needed for support.

Rejections rose from 11% in 2022 to 46% in 2024. Many fear deportation and stay silent. A House of Lords report estimates 130,000 victims exist. Data shows foreigners face harsher treatment than British applicants.

Officials lack proof of system misuse. Experts warn that stricter laws help traffickers. Victims struggle to provide evidence. Some officials hesitate to refer cases. The system fails to protect victims, leaving many trapped.

Greece’s Golden Visa Gains Popularity as Spain Ends Its Program

Greece’s Golden Visa Program is seeing more applications from wealthy investors. The rise is driven by Spain’s plan to end its Residency-by-Investment Program by April 2025 and Portugal's removal of real estate investment as an option.

Greece increased investment thresholds in top locations to €800,000 but still allows €250,000 investments in less popular areas. In 2024 Greece received 9,289 applications, a 10% rise from 2023.

The program grew by 25% annually from 2018 to 2024. Experts expect continued demand, especially from U.S. investors. Greece remains attractive as other countries tighten their investment residency schemes.
