Canada Warns Citizens With U.S. Green Cards About Risk of Losing Status

Canada has issued a new travel warning for citizens who hold U.S. permanent resident status, cautioning that their green cards could be reassessed or revoked. Ottawa says the change follows stricter U.S. immigration policies and warns that status may be terminated if residents spend long periods abroad or have criminal convictions.

The update also highlights risks for LGBTQ travellers, as U.S. agencies now require “sex assigned at birth” on official documents, ending the use of the “X” gender marker.

The advisory follows the death of a Canadian detainee in Florida and ongoing U.S. travel bans affecting residents from countries like Iran and Yemen. Canada, meanwhile, is working to attract displaced H-1B tech workers.
