Schengen visa rejections are notably higher for certain nationalities, with common factors identified. In 2023, 1.6 million visa applications were rejected, representing 15.8% of all applications.
Many of the highest rejection rates are from African and Asian countries. Six out of ten are African nations: Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Mali, Guinea, and Senegal, with rejection rates between 57% and 41%. Asian countries with high rejection rates include Pakistan, Syria, and Bangladesh.
These nations often have low GDP per capita and high immigration rates. For instance, Syria and Bangladesh have filed significant numbers of asylum applications in the EU.
