Denmark Plans to End Rule Granting Residence Permits to Rejected Asylum Seekers

Denmark

#residence

Denmark is considering abolishing a rule that allows rejected asylum seekers to stay in the country for 18 months and potentially obtain residence permits. According to the Ministry of Immigration and Integration, the rule is rarely applied and costly to manage.

Immigration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek supports the change, stating it reduces unnecessary bureaucracy and addresses foreigners who do not require protection.

The proposal will undergo a hearing phase before a parliamentary vote. Only 18 residence permits were issued under this rule between 2016 and 2024. Denmark has received 900 asylum applications so far in 2024.

Trump Threatens Mass Deportations of Haitian Immigrants in Ohio

Haiti United States

Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, pledged large-scale deportations of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, despite most being in the U.S. legally. He made this claim while falsely accusing Haitian arrivals of causing harm to the community.

Tensions in Springfield have risen, with bomb threats against schools linked to anti-immigrant rhetoric. President Joe Biden condemned the hate-fueled threats, calling for unity and protection of the Haitian community.

Local officials, including Springfield’s mayor, have urged calm and stated that no credible evidence supports the accusations made against Haitian immigrants. Community leaders fear Trump’s remarks may incite more violence.

Revealed: Inhumane Treatment of Migrants Under UK’s Scrapped Rwanda Plan

Rwanda United Kingdom

Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal the mistreatment of migrants detained under the failed UK Rwanda deportation plan. Operation Vector launched before the 2024 elections, involved using force against distressed migrants.

Over 60 instances of force were recorded in just two weeks. Some detainees attempted self-harm, while others faced physical restraint. Migrants were reportedly kept in poor conditions at Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre.

The scheme was halted by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, but legal challenges and compensation claims are expected. Critics argue that the plan used vulnerable migrants as political pawns, causing lasting harm.

Canada welcomed 16,925 new permanent residents through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) by July 2024, slightly lower than last year. Immigration for parents and grandparents dropped 10.3% compared to the first seven months of 2023.

Ontario saw the most PGP arrivals, with significant gains in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. While immigration slowed in June and July, Canada could still see around 29,000 arrivals this year.

Sponsors must meet eligibility criteria, provide financial support, and keep application information updated. The IRCC continues to process applications efficiently, with biometric and medical requirements for those sponsored.
