The EU has approved tougher rules that make it easier and faster to suspend visa-free travel for non-EU countries. The bloc lowered the trigger to a 30 percent rise in irregular migration or security risks, giving the Commission more power to act quickly.
Suspensions can now last up to 12 months and be extended for another 24 months. The new rules also address issues such as golden passports, poor visa alignment, and human rights concerns.
Countries in the Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership face closer scrutiny under the updated system. With EES and ETIAS coming soon, travelers can expect tighter checks and faster responses from EU border authorities.
