Germany is looking to expand its list of safe countries of origin, aiming to fast-track asylum procedures. But a recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling may slow things down.
The court said EU nations can only label a country as “safe” if it protects all citizens, including minorities, and asylum seekers can legally challenge the label. Germany wants to add India, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia to the list, yet concerns over human rights, especially for LGBTQ+ communities, could block that.
Interior Minister Dobrindt also wants to scrap some legal protections to speed up deportations. But critics say reforms may clash with EU human rights standards.
