Germany Reflects on 10 Years of Refugee Integration

Remember Merkel’s famous “We can do it” in 2015? Ten years later, Germany is taking stock of how the integration of refugees has played out. Since 2015, about 1.2 million asylum-seekers have arrived, mostly from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Today, around 3.5 million people seeking protection live in Germany, with Syrians making up the largest group. Many have found employment, although average refugee incomes remain significantly below those of German workers.

Language skills are improving, but women still face significant challenges in the workplace and integration. About 414,000 refugees have even become German citizens. Still, public opinion has shifted 68% now say Germany should accept fewer refugees. So, has “We can do it” really worked out? What do you think?
