Immigrant workers in Los Angeles are feeling the financial squeeze as ICE raids spark fear across neighborhoods. A new survey by The Rent Brigade shows weekly earnings for immigrant renters dropped from $800 to just $300 this summer, a 62% decline.
Many day laborers, vendors, and domestic workers avoided jobs out of fear of being detained, with 28% now owing more than a month’s rent. Some landlords have even threatened to call ICE on tenants, despite California law banning it.
Advocates say the city must step up with stronger tenant protections and even consider an eviction moratorium. Should people really have to choose between safety and rent?
