Iceland Holds Early Election Amid Political and Economic Challenges
Iceland
#economy
Iceland held an early parliamentary election after Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson’s coalition collapsed over disagreements on immigration, energy, and the economy.
This marks the nation’s sixth election since the 2008 financial crisis. Political instability persists, with declining support for governing parties. Ten parties are contesting the 63 seats in parliament. Key issues include rising inflation, immigration pressures, and housing shortages, worsened by volcanic eruptions and tourism-driven demand.
Despite these challenges, voter turnout remains high, reflecting Iceland’s strong democratic traditions. Benediktsson’s Independence Party faces tough competition as Icelanders hope for fresh ideas to tackle economic and social issues.

UK Government Increases Legal Aid Fees to Address Immigration Backlog
United Kingdom
#immigration
#backlog
The UK government announced a 10% increase in legal aid fees for immigration, asylum, housing, and debt work. Legal aid fees have remained unchanged since 1996, causing many lawyers to abandon the field.
The increase aims to address the severe legal representation shortage, which left over 54,000 asylum seekers without lawyers in 2024. The backlog of unresolved asylum cases has surged, with appeals averaging 46 weeks.
Duncan Lewis solicitors prompted the change through judicial review proceedings. In addition to the fee hike, the government plans further consultations to improve legal aid rates and tackle delays in the justice system.

#visapolicy
The Finnish Immigration Service is reviewing and revoking student residence permits that fail to meet eligibility requirements. By September 2024, 264 permits had been canceled, and 216 were still under review.
This action follows automated permit checks introduced in 2023, which examined 5,795 permits over 12 months. Periodic reviews are mandatory under Finland’s rules.
Permit processing times have improved. The first permit now takes eight days, down from 36 days in 2023. Finland is also exploring policies to retain skilled talent, including permanent residence for master’s graduates who pass a language test. The proposal is under consideration.

#digitalvisa
Belize has introduced a new digital system for immigration and customs declarations, which will be launched on December 1, 2024, at the Philip Goldson International Airport.
The platform allows travelers to complete forms online before arrival or departure, enhancing accuracy and efficiency. Paper and digital forms will be accepted during a three-month trial to ensure a smooth transition.
This system, part of Belize's modernization efforts, aims to streamline travel procedures and reduce paperwork. Feedback from users will help refine the system. By the second phase, it will expand to all ports of entry, promising faster and easier processing for all travelers.
