Immigrant Voters Poised to Shape Germany's Upcoming Election
Germany
#immigration
Immigrant voters could significantly influence Germany's upcoming election. With 7.1 million eligible voters having an immigration background, they represent a key demographic. However, they often vote less frequently and are less committed to parties.
Inflation, economy, and retirement concerns resonate strongly with them. The Social Democrats (SPD) remain popular but face declining support, especially among German-Turkish voters who feel ostracized.
The far-right AfD and Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance have gained traction by targeting immigrant subgroups, including post-Soviet resettlers and long-term immigrants. Experts highlight the importance of fostering inclusion and addressing discrimination to encourage higher participation and better political engagement from this group.

US Immigration Crackdown: 956 Arrests in Single-Day Operation
United States

#illegal
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 956 illegal immigrants nationwide on Sunday. The operation targeted individuals with criminal records, including gang members and those convicted of murder and sex crimes.
Some detainees lacked criminal records but were present during the raids. ICE’s actions align with President Trump’s pledge to intensify deportations. Border czar Tom Homan stated raids will now include churches and schools on a case-by-case basis.
Chicago’s mayor confirmed no local police involvement, while Illinois Governor JB Pritzker opposed detaining non-criminal immigrants. Since Trump’s inauguration, ICE has made 2,681 arrests. Similar raids occurred across multiple states.

Germany's Immigration Crisis: A Political Turning Point
Austria
Germany
#immigration
Germany’s immigration debate has reignited after a tragic attack by an Afghan asylum seeker. CDU leader Friedrich Merz now proposes reintroducing border controls, which could end the EU’s Schengen system. His stance challenges the political "firewall" against the far-right AfD.
Merz risks coalition breakdowns as his policies are unlikely to align with centrist partners. Critics fear his gamble strengthens the AfD, a party linked to nationalism and neo-Nazi sympathies.
Austria’s recent coalition with its far-right Freedom Party shows how quickly firewalls can collapse. Without change, Germany’s political gridlock continues, leaving voters stuck with centrist policies and fueling AfD’s rise.

Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will launch new Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots on March 31, 2025. These pilots will replace expired permanent residence pathways for caregivers.
Eligible home care workers can gain PR upon arrival. Requirements include CLB level 4 language ability, a high school diploma, relevant work experience, and a full-time job offer. Earlier pathways like the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker Pilots ended in 2024.
The new pilots fall under IRCC’s 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan, which includes 10,920 spots for federal economic pilots such as caregiver programs, the Agri-Food Pilot, and others.
