Immigrants Vital for Addressing America's Care Worker Crisis

United States

#workvisa

#healthcare

President-elect Trump plans mass deportations and immigration restrictions but supports H-1B visas for tech workers due to labour shortages. A similar crisis exists in caregiving, with severe shortages of nurses and aides for older adults and people with disabilities.

Immigrants fill vital roles in caregiving, with nearly one-third of home care workers being foreign-born. These workers enable families to remain productive and reduce healthcare costs.

The U.S. faces a massive demand for care jobs by 2032. Deportation plans could worsen the crisis. Reviving visa programs for caregivers could help, as these roles are essential, much like tech workers in Silicon Valley.

Canada Introduces New Measures to Strengthen Border Security

Canada

Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller and Public Safety Minister David McGuinty announced new measures to enhance border security. The IRCC plans to impose fines of up to $1.5 million on fraudulent immigration consultants and publicly listed violators.

Canada’s information-sharing agreement with the U.S. will expand to include permanent residents, improving fraud prevention and application processing. Visitor visa scrutiny has increased, leading to fewer asylum claims and illegal crossings.

Visa refusals rose by 61% in high-abuse countries. While major changes to the international student program are unlikely soon, additional adjustments are possible. These measures align with Canada’s efforts to tighten border integrity.

Japan

Japan has raised visa application fees effective April 1. The new fees include ¥6,000 for visa extensions, ¥10,000 for permanent residency, and ¥7,000 for re-entry permits. Online applications cost slightly less.

The startup visa duration now extends to two years, providing entrepreneurs more time to establish businesses. Starting January 2025, the visa will be available nationwide. It allows entrepreneurs to bypass upfront operational requirements and prepare for the Business Manager Visa.

Japan aims to attract global talent in AI, biotech, and healthcare. However, language barriers and low salaries make Japan less appealing to Indian workers compared to other destinations.

Canada to Restrict Family Open Work Permits from January 2025

Canada

#workvisa

#familyvisa

Starting January 21, 2025, Canada will impose stricter rules on family Open Work Permits (OWPs). Spouses of international students will qualify only if the student is in specific master’s or doctoral programs, or certain professional courses.

For foreign workers, OWPs will be limited to spouses in TEER 0, TEER 1, and eligible TEER 2 or 3 occupations. Dependent children will no longer be eligible for OWPs.

Permits issued under previous policies will remain valid, and renewals are allowed. These changes aim to reduce temporary residents and address housing concerns. Spouses under free trade agreements or PR sponsorship remain unaffected.
