IRCC Backlog Sees First Decline in Months
Canada
#backlog
#decline
As of October 31, IRCC’s backlog decreased to 1,056,100 applications, a 3.73% drop from September. Total applications in inventory also reduced to 2,406,000, with 1,349,900 processed within service standards.
For permanent residents, 63% of applications met service standards, though Express Entry and PNP backlogs increased slightly. Temporary residence applications saw improvements, with study permit and work permit backlogs dropping to 33% and 46%, respectively. Citizenship applications remained steady at a 17% backlog.
IRCC’s efforts to reduce backlogs include setting lower immigration targets, using online portals, conducting virtual citizenship ceremonies, and streamlining judicial review for study permit rejections, which has significantly reduced wait times.

IRCC Conducts First Express Entry Draw of December for PNP Candidates
Canada
#workvisa
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited 676 candidates in a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-specific draw on December 2, 2024. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score required was 705.
In November 2024, IRCC held six Express Entry draws, issuing 5,507 Invitations to Apply (ITAs). Consistent draws target Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and PNP candidates. The new "In-Canada" category and Francophone immigration are expected to see increased ITAs under the Immigration Levels Plan.
Express Entry manages applications for federal economic immigration programs, with CRS scores determining invitations. Category-based selections also play a key role in aligning immigration with Canada’s needs.

A fifth are from Asia, with significant numbers from the Dominican Republic and China. Many undocumented immigrants work in essential roles such as healthcare, construction, and service jobs but face higher poverty rates and overcrowded housing.
Queens and Brooklyn are key hubs. About 89% speak some English, but only 22% have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Undocumented immigrants contribute to the economy yet face challenges under potential immigration policies.

Surge in Illegal US-Canada Border Crossings by Indian Migrants: Reasons Explored
Canada
United States
#immigration
#illegal
Indian migrants are increasingly crossing the US-Canada border illegally. In 2023, over 43,000 Indians, or 22% of total illegal border encounters, were apprehended.
Canada's easier visa policies and faster processing times make it an accessible entry point compared to the US. Migrants often originate from Punjab and Haryana, which are driven by economic hardships, unemployment, and farming crises.
Many pay smugglers hefty fees for perilous journeys. The US-Canada border's lesser surveillance than the southern border also plays a role. Despite risks, economic opportunities and dreams of a better life in the US remain powerful motivators for these migrants.
