IRCC Implements Measures to Verify International Students' Acceptance Letters
Canada
#studentvisa
Canada's Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced measures to enhance the integrity of the international student program. The new online portal for Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) allows them to verify letters of acceptance (LOAs) submitted by international students.
DLIs must complete verification within 10 days, with non-compliance leading to visa application cancellations. These measures aim to prevent abuses, including instances of fraudulent acceptance letters.
The Trusted Institutions Framework, proposed by IRCC, will introduce a two-tiered system for study permits, and further changes in 2024 include adjustments to cost-of-living requirements and revisions to the Post-Graduation Work Permit program.

UK Visa Applications Drop 43% Amid Stricter Rules and AI Visa Proposal
United Kingdom

#skilledworkers
UK visa applications fell 43% between April and December 2024, with 547,000 applications compared to 942,500 in 2023. The drop of 395,100 is linked to stricter immigration rules, including bans on dependants for care workers and higher salary thresholds for skilled workers.
Health and care worker visa applications declined 79%. Universities face financial concerns due to fewer overseas students and frozen domestic tuition fees.
The Prime Minister’s upcoming AI Opportunities Action Plan may propose fast-track visas for AI experts. Industry leaders urge streamlining to reduce bureaucracy and costs in hiring skilled workers. Visa reforms continue to impact various sectors.

Bipartisan Backing Grows for GOP Immigration Bill Amid Democrat Strategy Shift
United States
#immigration
#policy
After the 2024 election, Democrats are shifting their stance on immigration, supporting the GOP-led Laken Riley Act. The bill mandates detaining unauthorized immigrants accused of crimes. It gained bipartisan backing, passing the House with 48 Democratic votes and advancing in the Senate with most Democrats' support.
Democrats aim to influence immigration debates under Trump's returning administration, which plans stricter asylum rules and mass deportations. The shift reflects political losses and the need to address public concerns.
Republicans, now holding a governing trifecta, prioritize border security. Democrats seek to collaborate strategically, ensuring negotiation power amid evolving political and public dynamics.
In 2023, Mexico’s immigration chief, Francisco Garduño, was blamed for mismanaging the migrant crisis. U.S. officials exposed the severity of the situation, leading to a confrontation with Mexico’s defence secretary.
Garduño faced criticism for systemic corruption, including extortion and abuse of migrants, and for downplaying the migrant numbers. A deadly fire at a detention centre also led to criminal charges.
Despite this, Garduño continued advising Mexico’s new government on migration. The pressure from the U.S. led to tighter border measures and decreased migrant encounters by 2024.
