An Irish grandmother with a US green card is facing deportation over a $25 bad cheque from 2015. Donna Hughes-Brown, 58, has lived in America since 1977, raising five children and grandchildren, but was detained in July after flying into Chicago.
Her husband, Jim Brown, a US veteran, says she already paid restitution and served probation for the cheque, but was caught under Trump’s new immigration law. Now held in isolation at an ICE detention center in Kentucky, Hughes-Brown has complained of “deplorable” conditions.
A deportation is scheduled for September 17, though her family hopes it will be dismissed. Her husband calls the situation unfair and heartbreaking.
