Lithuania's Ministry of the Interior has introduced stricter rules for selecting foreign countries where applications for temporary residence permits can be submitted via external service providers. The new criteria consider state security, foreign policy, labour market needs, and institutional capacities.

The Department of Migration will consult with security and police authorities before approving the list of eligible countries. Currently, Türkiye, UAE, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan send the most visitors to Lithuania.

In 2023, 29,739 applications were submitted through external service providers. Recently, Lithuania banned 1,216 foreigners and revoked 1,483 residence permits due to work contract issues.

Hungary Pushes for Schengen Land Border Inclusion for Bulgaria and Romania by Year-End

United kingdom,United state

#schengen

Hungary expects a decision on Schengen land border accession for Bulgaria and Romania by the end of this year. Deputy Minister of the Interior, Bence Retvari, emphasized its importance and called for additional EU resources to support Bulgaria and Greece in securing external borders.

Retvari warned that failing to enhance security could lead to re-establishing internal European borders. Currently, Bulgaria and Romania are Schengen members for sea and air travel but still face land border controls.

Hungary's EU presidency prioritizes resolving this and reducing irregular migration, alongside supporting the EU’s expansion to the Western Balkans and other candidate states.

Saskatchewan's Immigration Services Act, effective July 1, aims to enhance the province's management of the immigration system and protect foreign workers from exploitation.

The Act replaces The Foreign Worker Recruitment and Immigration Services Act, unifying all immigration authorities under a single legislative body. It will streamline processes for employers recruiting internationally and address workforce needs. Immigration Minister Jeremy Harrison highlighted its role in protecting workers and supporting the economy.

The Act grants the government enhanced investigative powers to combat immigration fraud, aligning with Saskatchewan's goal of reaching 1.4 million people by 2030. The Regina Open Door Society supports the new legislation for bolstering newcomer support.
