Luxembourg to Oppose German Border Controls in EU

Germany Luxembourg

#restriction

Luxembourg will challenge Germany’s extended border controls in the EU. Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden called the measure “absurd” and said it harms cross-border commuters.

Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser defends the checks, citing reduced irregular migration. If renewed in April, Luxembourg will appeal to the EU Commission. Meanwhile, Germany faces protests over stricter immigration laws.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz pledged permanent border controls and tougher entry rules. Since September 2024, Germany has turned away 43,500 people, including 49 Luxembourgers. Critics argue the controls violate Schengen principles and disrupt daily travel between the two nations.

France’s Tougher Citizenship Language Tests Spark Backlash

France

#citizenship

#policy

France is enforcing stricter language tests for foreigners seeking residency or citizenship. The law, passed in January 2024, requires applicants to meet levels equivalent to lower secondary school students.

Reports suggest even native French speakers struggle with the tests. Critics argue that the requirements are too strict, leading to 60,000 people losing their residency rights.

Officials claim the policy promotes integration, aligning with other European nations. Some, like refugees and workers, say they lack time to study. Retirees over 65 and annual visitor card applicants may be exempt. The decree’s start date remains undecided.

USCIS Allows 30-Day Grace Period for Older Immigration Forms

United States

#immigration

USCIS has granted a 30-day grace period for older versions of key immigration forms. The decision follows a lawsuit challenging the sudden rollout of updated forms. Affected forms include I-485, N-400, I-134, and I-918.

The new forms revert to the term “alien” and remove nonbinary gender options. Previously, USCIS required immediate use of the updated versions, which was confusing.

The lawsuit argued this was unfair. Both old and new forms will be accepted until the grace period ends. After that, only the January 20, 2025, versions will be valid. Applicants should check USCIS for updates.

Canada Sets PR Target for Home Care Worker Immigration Pilot

Canada

#permanentresidence

#healthcare

Canada will grant permanent residence to 2,750 home care workers under the new Home Care Worker Immigration Pilot (HCWP). Of these, 150 spots are for out-of-status workers.

The HCWP has two streams, but only in-Canada applicants can apply from March 31. Eligibility requires six months of relevant experience or education, CLB 4 language skills, and a full-time job offer.

The HCWP aligns with Canada’s push for regularization, similar to a new pathway for 6,000 out-of-status construction workers. These initiatives help Canada meet immigration targets while addressing labor shortages in key sectors like home care and construction.
