Modi and Trump: Aligned on Immigration Policies

India United States

#immigration

#policy

In February, images of shackled Indian deportees from the US shocked India. Opposition leaders protested, demanding that Modi address the issue with Trump. But Modi downplayed it, calling undocumented migration a scam.

He avoided conflict, focusing on trade talks. Both leaders share anti-immigration views. Modi, like Trump, links migration to crime and economic issues. In India, Hindu nationalists push fear of Bangladeshi migrants, using exaggerated numbers.

Laws like the Citizenship Amendment Act target Muslims. Modi prioritizes ties with Trump over protecting undocumented Indians. His stance mirrors Trump's, showing little concern for migrant hardships.

Namibia will impose visa requirements on US tourists starting April 1, 2025. US visitors must apply online in advance or get a visa on arrival at major entry points. This change ends the previous visa-free stay of up to 90 days. The policy follows Namibia's decision to require visas for countries that do not offer reciprocal access.

The rule affects 31 nations, including the US, Canada, and the EU. Authorities say this move ensures fair diplomatic relations. Namibia also announced higher visa fees. The US Embassy in Namibia confirmed the new rule on March 25.

New Zealand now permits visitors to work remotely while in the country. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said this move aims to attract travelers who can work and explore.

Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis hopes it will also encourage future business ties. Visitors, including those with an NZeTA, cannot work for local employers or provide services within New Zealand.

Stays beyond 92 days may have tax implications. The changes also apply to family visitors and guardians. In December 2024, New Zealand revised its Golden Visa Program to attract wealthy investors. The country aims to boost its economy and tourism.
