More NC Police Join ICE to Enforce Deportations

Immigration enforcement in North Carolina is intensifying as more local police agencies partner with ICE under the 287(g) program. ICE data shows 23 law enforcement agencies across the state are now working with the federal agency, with eight joining since Trump’s return to office in January.

Most departments help identify undocumented immigrants inside jails, but some are going further. The Brookford Police Department near Hickory is the first in NC to use a task force model, allowing officers to flag suspected undocumented immigrants even if no crime was committed.

Supporters say it boosts safety, but critics argue it fuels fear in immigrant communities. What’s your take on safety measures or overreach?
