New Zealand just launched its International Education Going for Growth plan to boost student numbers from 83,700 in 2024 to 119,000 by 2034. Immigration changes will increase work hours for study visa holders to 25 hours per week, effective November 3.
Post-study visa options and multi-year visa ease-ups are also on the table. The goal? Double the sector’s value to NZ$7.2 billion and boost NZ’s status as a top study destination. China and India remain top sources, but NZ’s also targeting broader markets.
Education Minister Erica Stanford says it’s all about balancing growth, quality education, and protecting locals. Unlike Australia’s tougher visa rules, NZ is betting big on international education to drive jobs and innovation.
