Over 7,000 Indian Students Overstayed US Visas in 2023, Expert Urges Reform
United States

#reforms
Over 7,000 Indian students overstayed US visas in 2023, the highest among all countries. Immigration expert Jessica Vaughan revealed this during a US House Committee hearing.
She urged stricter immigration laws, especially for the H-1B visa program. The F and M visa categories have the highest overstay rates. Vaughan proposed limiting H-1B visas to two years and reducing annual approvals to 75,000.
She also suggested stricter visa issuance policies to ensure students return home. Canada hosts the most Indian students (427,000), followed by the US (337,630), the UK (185,000), Australia (122,202), and Germany (42,997).

Canada

Canada has launched the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP). It helps foreign workers fill labour shortages in rural areas. Fourteen communities will participate, including Sudbury, Moose Jaw, and Steinbach.
Candidates need a job offer from a designated employer, work experience, and proof of funds. Language and education requirements depend on the job. Applicants must also show intent to reside in the community.
RCIP replaces the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP), which ended in August 2024. The government may make RNIP permanent. We will soon share more details on employer applications and candidate timelines.

German Parliament Rejects Immigration Bill Backed by Far-Right
Germany
#immigration
Germany's parliament rejected an immigration bill from the CDU, backed by the far-right AfD. CDU leader Friedrich Merz faced backlash for relying on AfD votes. The bill lost by 350 to 338 votes.
Angela Merkel criticized Merz for breaking his pledge not to work with AfD. Protests erupted across Germany. Chancellor Olaf Scholz called Merz’s move an "unforgivable mistake."
The rejected bill aimed to curb immigration and limit family reunions. Immigration is a key issue in Germany’s snap election next month. The CDU leads the polls, while the AfD ranks second. Merz ruled out a coalition with AfD.

E-Visa Failures Leave Refugees Homeless as Home Office Faces Criticism
United Kingdom
#refugee
#evisa
The UK’s e-visa system is failing, leaving people unable to access benefits or housing. Refugees like Khidir, 34, were left homeless due to non-functional e-visas. Caseworkers say Home Office staff are “learning on the job,” leading to errors and delays.
Many refugees cannot register their accounts due to missing or incorrect details. Calls to UKVI often go unresolved. The Home Office promised fixes within 10 days, but many wait weeks.
Experts warn of a potential “Windrush-style disaster.” The transition to digital visas, set for March 2025, may leave thousands undocumented. By November 2024, over 3.1 million had signed up.
