UK nationality applications have risen significantly ahead of the 2016 EU referendum. Fears over a potential UK exit from the EU are driving many EU migrants to apply for dual citizenship.

Naturalisation numbers for EU citizens in the UK increased from 10,000 in 2009 to 18,000 in 2013. Brexit could lead to visa requirements for EU nationals living in the UK and additional health care costs.

Although many are applying, UK citizenship is a complex, expensive process. If Brexit occurs, it may trigger years of immigration reform, impacting foreign pensions, property ownership, and business regulations across Europe.

Estonia aims to increase its foreign worker quota, allowing up to 4,000 immigrants annually if economic growth surpasses two percent. Currently, 1,303 foreign workers are permitted each year, representing 0.1% of the population.

Economy Minister Erkki Keldo proposes raising the quota to 2,600, with the potential for further increases. Ministers remain divided, with some advocating for joint decisions with trade unions.

Estonia has also implemented stricter migration measures, requiring a one-year visa for foreign workers. Despite economic challenges, exemptions exist for EU citizens and skilled professionals in specific sectors like IT and startups.

Long-term UK residents are worried about being “locked out” as the UK moves from biometric residence permits (BRPs) to eVisas. Critics argue that the new system has flaws and may create issues for those proving their right to reside, work, and access services.

Many, especially older residents with legacy documents, are unaware of the changes. Experts warn of a potential repeat of the Windrush scandal.

Some fear being denied re-entry to the UK after travelling abroad. The Home Office insists the transition is secure, but affected individuals face stress and uncertainty over their future in the UK.
