Thailand to Grant Citizenship to Nearly Half a Million Long-Term Immigrants
Thailand
#citizenship
#immigration
Thailand plans to grant citizenship to 483,626 long-term immigrants from Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and ethnic minority groups. These include about 120,000 who arrived between 1984 and 1999 and 215,000 from 2005 to 2011.
Additionally, citizenship will be extended to approximately 29,000 children born to ethnic minority parents in Thailand and 113,000 individuals born to unregistered people. Former MP Saw Hti Wah noted that necessary documentation and Thai authority recognition are required for eligibility.
The government is also exploring ways to expedite the citizenship process, which could otherwise take decades. Children of Mountain Tribe Card holders may become citizens after graduating from university.

New Zealand Prioritizes Work Visa Applications for Key Sectors
New Zealand
#workvisa
New Zealand Immigration is fast-tracking Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applications to improve processing times. The AEWV permits foreign workers with job offers from accredited employers to work in New Zealand for up to five years.
This week's priorities include employer accreditation renewals, Job Check applications for Green List and ANZSCO skill-level roles, and work visa applications linked to expiring employer accreditations.
Incomplete applications may still slow down the process, so applicants should ensure all required documents, like police certificates and English language test results, are included. Priority groups are reviewed weekly, and incomplete applications risk delays or declines.

Austria
Denmark

#restriction
Several EU countries strictly enforce citizenship eligibility rules requiring a clean criminal record. Austria demands a certificate showing no past criminal convictions. Germany bars citizenship for those with racist or antisemitic offenses and restricts applicants to minor sentences.
Denmark denies citizenship to applicants with serious charges, especially gang-related or violent crimes. Based on the offense, Sweden allows those with past crimes to apply only after waiting periods ranging from 1 to 10 years.
In the Netherlands, applicants must wait at least five years after any crime before applying. These policies reflect the countries' commitment to vetting applicants’ backgrounds thoroughly.

Detention of Palestinian Refugee Sparks Visa Scrutiny in Australia
Australia
#refugee
The Australian government faces scrutiny after placing a Palestinian refugee from Gaza in immigration detention for failing a character test. Home Affairs officials revealed the case in a Senate hearing but provided limited details, citing privacy concerns.
The individual may face deportation, though options are complex due to the ongoing Gaza conflict. Since October, Australia has issued 3,041 visas to Gazans, primarily visitor visas, while 7,252 applications were denied.
The opposition criticized the government’s screening process, warning of potential security risks. The government defended its vetting, affirming that Australian intelligence reviews each case.
