US Bill Could Make Old DUI a Reason to Deport Green Card and Visa Holders

Should immigrants in the US be worried about old drunk-driving cases? A new bill called the Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act is raising alarms.

Passed in the House with strong Republican support, it would make even a single DUI (Driving Under the Influence), no matter how old, grounds for deportation or denial of entry for Green Card holders, visa holders, and international students.

Critics warn it’s cultivated, since even admitting to past drink-driving could count, with no hearing or path forward. Immigration lawyers say this could heavily affect Indian residents, who form the largest group of Green Card recipients. The bill now awaits Senate approval before it can become law.
