US Immigrant Population Drops Sharply Amid Trump Crackdown

For the first time in decades, the US immigrant population has fallen by 1.4 million since Trump returned to office in January. Pew Research says the number dropped from a record 53.3 million to 51.9 million by June 2025.

Immigrants now make up 15.4% of the US population, a slight decrease from earlier this year. The crackdown includes Trump’s 181 executive actions, mass deportations, and tighter visa rules. ICE arrests have surged, with many immigrants detained even without criminal records.

Mexico remains the top source of immigrants, though its share has been shrinking. With 19% of the workforce foreign-born, the big question is: how will these immigration policies reshape America’s future?
