USCIS Brings Back Neighborhood Checks for Citizenship Applicants

Thinking of applying for U.S. citizenship? Here’s a big update. USCIS has officially resumed neighborhood checks for naturalization applicants after a hiatus of more than 30 years. Officers can now contact neighbors, coworkers, or employers to verify details about an applicant’s character and eligibility.

The policy change ends the blanket waiver that had been in place since 1991. Instead, checks will now be decided on a case-by-case basis. Submitting strong testimonial letters may help you avoid extra scrutiny.

While the move aims to protect the integrity of the naturalization process, it may also result in increased delays. So, would you feel ready if USCIS knocked on your neighbor’s door?
