The Hague saw chaos on Saturday as an anti-immigration protest spiraled into violence, just weeks before the Netherlands heads to a snap election. Police used tear gas and water cannons after protesters, many waving Dutch and far-right flags, hurled rocks and bottles.
A police car was torched, and the D66 party office was damaged. The rally, organized by activist “Els Rechts,” was meant to push for stricter migration policies but quickly turned ugly. Rob Jetten of D66 blasted the rioters, vowing not to be intimidated.
Far-right leader Geert Wilders, who pulled his party from government over immigration, condemned the violence, calling protesters “idiots.” Will this unrest tilt the immigration debate before the October 29 vote?
