IRCC Backlog Grows Again, Despite Faster Study Permit Processing

Canada’s immigration backlog is once again growing. As of June 30, 2025, IRCC had 842,800 applications in the backlog, a 5% increase from May. Although study permit backlogs have dropped to 18%, other categories are still struggling.

Work permit backlogs hit 40%, while Express Entry and PNP streams remain high at 20% and 48%, respectively. Family sponsorship and citizenship grants are closer to target levels, but visitor visa delays continue.

In total, 2.18 million applications were in IRCC’s system, with 1.34 million processed on time. IRCC is utilising automation tools to expedite the process, but progress is uneven. Thinking of applying? Be prepared for delays, unless you’re fortunate enough to receive a study permit quickly.
