Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says the state will open a new immigration jail at the old Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson. The facility, dubbed the “deportation depot,” will hold up to 1,300 undocumented immigrants awaiting deportation.
DeSantis calls it extra capacity beyond the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades, which is facing lawsuits over inhumane conditions. Critics say detainees there suffer extreme heat, broken toilets, poor food, and disease outbreaks.
While a judge weighs shutting it down, DeSantis insists Florida is backing Trump’s immigration enforcement. He says Baker is ready-made, close to an airport, and aimed at quick processing, not indefinite detention. What do you think about Florida’s expanding immigration crackdown?
