Immigrants With No Criminal Record Now Make Up Most of ICE Detentions

Here’s a twist in the US immigration debate: immigrants with no criminal record are now the largest group in ICE detention. New government data reveal that 16,523 individuals without a criminal history are being held, compared to 15,725 with convictions and 13,767 with pending charges.

That’s a first under Trump’s second administration, despite claims that ICE mainly targets “dangerous criminals.” Critics say being undocumented is a civil violation, not a crime, and point out that many detained are workers and long-time residents.

With ICE ramping up raids, including collateral arrests, the number of immigrants with no criminal history in detention keeps rising. What do you think about this shift?
