Australia Strikes Controversial Deportation Deal with Nauru

Big news out of Canberra: Australia just signed a deal with Nauru to deport people without valid visas to the tiny Pacific nation. The agreement includes a $267 million upfront payment upon the arrival of the first group, plus $46 million annually for resettlement.

Officials say it targets migrants and refugees released after the High Court overturned indefinite detention in 2023, many of whom have criminal records. But refugee advocates and human rights groups are slamming the move, calling it “discriminatory and dangerous.”

They warn it could mean mass deportations without notice. What do you think, tough border protection or another blow to vulnerable migrants?
