Drop in Ukrainian Refugees Leads to Fewer Immigrant Arrivals in Netherlands 2023
United kingdom, United state
In 2023, the Netherlands saw 336,000 immigrants, 68,000 fewer than in 2022. This drop was mainly due to fewer Ukrainian refugees arriving under the Temporary Protection Directive, with numbers falling from 108,000 in 2022 to 37,000 in 2023.
Immigrant numbers from other countries remained stable. Non-EU/EFTA immigrants mostly came to join family members, making up 25% of this group.
Asylum and student migrants increased, but knowledge migrants decreased by 5,000 to 21,500. Most asylum migrants were from Syria, Yemen, and Turkey. Immigration from EU/EFTA countries rose, with work being the primary reason for migration.
