The number of migrants ordered to leave EU countries decreased by 2% in the first quarter of 2024, with 2,070 fewer orders compared to Q4 2023. However, returns to other countries increased by 6%, totalling 30,570.

France and Germany issued nearly 48% of all orders, with France alone ordering 34,190 non-EU citizens to leave. Algeria and Morocco had the highest number of nationals ordered to leave, each representing 7% of the total.

Georgia led in returns, accounting for 9%. The shift reflects evolving migration and enforcement trends within the EU.

Australia has doubled student visa application fees, effective 1 July 2024. The fee now stands at AUS$1,600, up from AUS$710, a 125% increase. The government cites the need to reflect the value of Australian education and fund key initiatives.

The new fee for accompanying applicants aged 18 and over is AUS$1,445, and AUS$390 for those under 18. This increase follows recent hikes in minimum fund requirements for international students.

Despite the rise, rejection rates for student visa applications have hit historical highs this year. The updated fees aim to restore integrity in the international education sector.

New Zealand has tightened work visa rules for Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) holders in ANZSCO levels 4 and 5 without residency pathways. These individuals can no longer sponsor visas for partners and dependent children.

However, affected family members can still apply independently for other visas. Exceptions include those already holding partner or dependent visas, roles with residency pathways, and individuals earning 1.5 times the average salary threshold.

The change aims to manage migration sustainably. Other recent changes include language requirements and reduced stay duration for low-skilled workers. New Zealand continues to attract highly skilled workers, addressing shortages in key sectors.
