In the biggest immigration crackdown in Sri Lanka’s history, 155 overstaying Indian nationals were arrested in Colombo. These men, aged 25 to 45, were working illegally at a back office for an international IT firm involved in online marketing and betting.
All had violated their visa conditions, overstaying from one month to a year. With detention space limited, authorities ordered immediate deportation. But not before collecting a whopping Rs. 33.6 million in visa fines and fees, each paying USD 700.
Immigration officials say this is the highest revenue generated from a single bust. It’s a strong message: overstaying your visa in Sri Lanka has serious consequences.
