UK Immigration Reforms May Hit Post-1992 Universities Hard

A new analysis from the Tony Blair Institute warns that UK immigration reforms could seriously impact the country’s Post-1992 universities, modern institutions already facing financial stress. These universities, heavily reliant on international student fees, risk major setbacks if planned cuts to student migration take effect.

With 43% of universities expected to report deficits in 2024/25 and 72% by 2025/26, the sector is under pressure. The think tank says newer institutions play a vital role in local economies and education access, making them especially vulnerable. The report urges policymakers to weigh the trade-offs between reducing net migration and maintaining a sustainable, regionally inclusive higher education system.
