UK Pushes for Reform of European Human Rights Convention Over Immigration Concerns

The UK government is calling for changes to the European Convention on Human Rights, arguing it hampers efforts to deport foreign criminals and migrants. Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood told the Council of Europe that the 70-year-old framework must “evolve” to reflect current political realities, especially regarding immigration and deportation rulings.

The Labour government, facing mounting public pressure, wants domestic judges to have clearer guidelines on interpreting the Convention. While Britain remains in the ECHR post-Brexit, it’s not alone in seeking reform; Italy and Denmark also back easing deportation processes. With Reform UK pushing for a total exit and the Conservatives reviewing their stance, this debate is heating up fast.
