The UK government is cracking down on fake immigration lawyers who exploit migrants for profit. Under new Home Office proposals, the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) will gain powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act to seize and freeze assets from rogue advisers.
The confiscated money will be reinvested in border security and frontline policing. Some fake advisers have made millions by offering fraudulent visa and deportation advice.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the move will ensure “crooks pay the price” while strengthening national security. The changes will follow a consultation this year, alongside tougher fines of up to £15,000 for anyone posing as an immigration lawyer.
