The US has agreed to allow South Korean workers to handle equipment installation and repairs at American investment sites, using B-1 temporary visas and the ESTA waiver program, according to Seoul’s foreign ministry.
A new visa section will also open at the US embassy in Seoul to smooth the process. The move comes after a massive immigration raid at Hyundai and LG’s Georgia battery plant left hundreds of South Koreans detained, sparking outrage in Seoul.
While this step helps in the short term, experts say it doesn’t solve the bigger problem, the lack of proper US visas for skilled South Korean workers. Should Washington create a new visa category to support its top investors?
