Sri Lanka’s immigration chief, Harsha Ilukpitiya, has been sentenced to two years in prison for contempt of court after ignoring orders to scrap a controversial visa outsourcing deal.
The contract, awarded under the Rajapaksa administration, replaced a local provider charging $1 per visa with a foreign consortium that hiked the fee to $25. Critics argued that the move would harm tourism and wasn’t transparent, given that the consortium was projected to earn billions.
Ilukpitiya, who had already been in custody for a year, admitted guilt. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s anti-corruption drive has now led to the removal of another top official. What do you think this visa contract was, a money-making scheme at the expense of travelers?
