In 2023, four in 10 illegal foreigners in South Korea entered without visas and overstayed the visa-free period, according to Justice Ministry data. Of the 423,675 illegal residents, 169,000 had used a visa waiver, while 87,000 entered on short-term visas.

Many overstayed to work illegally without proper employment visas. The majority, 76.3%, were from Thailand, followed by Chinese nationals and Kazakhs.

South Korea previously suspended visa waivers for Pakistan and Bangladesh due to rising illegal entries from those countries. This issue highlights the ongoing challenges of visa overstays in South Korea.

Canada Introduces Pilot Project to Speed Up Study Permit Rejections Review

Canada

#studentvisa

Canada's Federal Court has launched the Study Permit Pilot Project, aimed at speeding up the review of rejected study permit applications. Starting October 1, the process for requesting judicial review of study permit refusals could be reduced to under five months, compared to the current 14-18 months.

Eligible applicants and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) must agree to opt into the program. Applicants can apply within 15 or 60 days, depending on location.

This move comes as the Federal Court faces a surge in immigration filings and Canada tightens policies for international students amidst housing and affordability concerns.

Harris Defends Immigration Stance Amid Criticism from Trump

United States

#immigration

Vice President Kamala Harris visited the southern border, reaffirming her plan to balance border security and humane immigration reform. She pledged to tighten restrictions on asylum seekers while expanding legal pathways to citizenship.

Harris emphasized cooperation with federal agencies to target drug cartels and transnational crime. Former President Trump criticized her approach, promising stricter measures, including the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.

Trump also accused Harris of allowing crimes by undocumented migrants. Harris countered, saying Trump prefers to run on immigration issues rather than solve them, pledging bipartisan efforts for immigration reform.

Australia Revises Temporary Graduate Visa Rules with Special Benefits for Indian Students

Australia

#visapolicy

Australia has announced significant changes to its Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), effective July 1, 2024. Key updates include a new age limit of 35 years for applicants and separate rules for Indian nationals under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA).

Indian students pursuing STEM degrees will receive extended post-study work rights, with up to three years for bachelor’s and four years for PhD graduates.

Other students from India also benefit from longer work permissions than those from other countries. The changes reflect Australia's goal to attract skilled immigrants while restricting non-genuine students.
