Canada Cuts Visas as Refugee Claims Decline
Canada
#refugee
#decline
Canada’s refugee claims are falling as the country issues fewer visas. In January, 11,840 claims were filed, down from 19,821 in July. Canada issued 1.5 million visitor visas last year, a drop from 1.8 million in 2023.
The decline is sharp for key asylum-seeking nations like Bangladesh, Haiti, and Nigeria. Pending refugee claims remain high at 278,457. Canada lacks asylum-seeker visas, forcing people to enter as visitors, students, or workers.
The government says it is targeting visa abuse, but advocates argue this leaves refugees stranded. Many now face dangerous journeys or long waits in camps for resettlement.

Spain Uses Immigration to Drive Economic Growth
Spain
#immigration
Spain thrives due to immigration. Foreign-born nationals make up 18.1% of its population. Immigration boosts the country's GDP, with growth surpassing that of other EU nations. Spain plans to regularize 300,000 undocumented migrants by 2027.
Measures ease work access for foreign students and extend residence permits. Immigrants help sustain the welfare system and revitalize rural areas. Burbáguena has benefited, with businesses and schools reopening.
Foreign workers in rural areas grew by 12.36%. Public support for immigration remains strong. Spain’s strategy balances humanitarian needs with economic goals. Its approach positions it as a leader in Europe’s immigration and financial policies.

DOJ Drops Immigration Case Against SpaceX
United States
#immigration
The U.S. Department of Justice will drop its case against SpaceX. The case accused the company of refusing to hire asylum seekers and refugees from 2018 to 2022. SpaceX argued U.S. export laws restricted hiring.
DOJ said those laws did not apply. The case was paused as SpaceX challenged the DOJ’s authority. A judge blocked the DOJ from pursuing it. DOJ now seeks to dismiss it with prejudice, preventing it from being refiled.
Elon Musk, a Trump adviser, has criticized federal agencies. Trump previously declared illegal immigration a national emergency and restricted asylum. Neither SpaceX nor the DOJ commented on the decision.

Badenoch Proposes 15-Year Citizenship Wait for UK Immigrants
United Kingdom
#citizenship
Kemi Badenoch plans stricter immigration rules. She wants migrants to wait 15 years for UK citizenship, and the ILR period would be extended from five to ten years. After ILR, migrants must wait five more years for citizenship.
Those on benefits, social housing, or with criminal records would be banned from settling. Illegal entrants and overstayers would never get citizenship. The proposal may apply retroactively to 2021.
Badenoch argues current rules make citizenship too easy. She wants only net contributors to settle. The plan will be debated in Parliament soon. Conservatives aim to tighten immigration and reduce public service strain.
