Finland Implements Post-Decision Monitoring for Startup Entrepreneurs' Permits
Finland
#businessvisa
#startup
Finland has launched a post-decision monitoring system for startup entrepreneurs who obtained residence permits after January 2023. This initiative ensures compliance with permit requirements, including residence status, financial support, criminal records, and startup performance.
The monitoring is crucial for internal security, preventing misuse of permits and illegal entry, and detecting issues like labour exploitation and human trafficking. Failure to meet requirements may lead to permit withdrawal, with authorities considering inputs from permit holders and their families during the process.

Kyrgyzstan
#immigration
#policy
Kyrgyzstan has introduced an immigration quota for 2025, limiting foreign nationals and stateless persons to 1,100 nationwide. Bishkek is allocated 300 spots, and Osh 100.
New regulations, effective September 2024, allow citizens of EAEU countries (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia) a 90-day stay within... 180 days without documentation. Citizens of Tajikistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Moldova can stay for 60 days within 120 days.
After their allowed stay, individuals must leave Kyrgyzstan. Re-entry is permitted only after a 60 or 90-day gap, based on the initial stay duration. These measures aim to manage immigration more effectively.

Spain will terminate its Golden Visa Program on April 3, 2025. The program, launched to attract foreign investments, has been a popular route for non-EU nationals to gain residency.
Investors could qualify by purchasing property worth €500,000, depositing €1 million in Spanish banks, or investing €2 million in government bonds. Residency permits were often granted within a month, offering visa-free Schengen travel and eligibility for permanent residency after five years.
Spanish citizenship could be pursued after ten years. Despite its success, the program will end, leaving limited time for applicants to benefit. Interested investors must act before the deadline.
As of November 30, IRCC's application backlog dropped to 1,006,500, a 4.7% decrease from October. The total application inventory also fell from 2,406,000 to 2,267,700.
Despite this progress, the permanent residence backlog grew slightly to 318,000, with Express Entry programs showing mixed results. Temporary residence applications saw a 54% backlog, with visitor visas hitting 75%. Citizenship applications remained steady at a low 17%.
IRCC has implemented measures like reduced immigration targets, advanced analytics, and prioritizing essential workers. New parent and grandparent sponsorships are paused for 2025, focusing instead on processing existing family sponsorship applications.
Hong Kong immigration officers arrested 26 suspected illegal workers and three employers during a citywide crackdown on renovation sites. The workers, aged 20 to 57, included 25 mainland Chinese men with visitor status and one Indonesian with a temporary stay pass.
Daily wages ranged from HK$100 to HK$600, significantly lower than the HK$1,000 earned by local workers. Tools were confiscated, and authorities found no organisational ties among the workers.
Employers hiring illegal workers face up to 10 years in prison and fines of HK$500,000. Residents are urged to verify worker eligibility and report concerns through a 24-hour hotline.
France will update its professions-in-shortage list by February 2025, facilitating undocumented worker regularisation under new immigration laws. This list, replacing the 2012 Valls circular, lets workers apply for status without employer permission.
In 2023, 34,724 people were regularised; new rules require three years’ residence and two years’ work in a shortage profession. The Labour and Interior Ministries identified high-demand roles, with engineers and master’s students dominating economic immigration.
France tightened employment rules in 2024, imposing fines on companies hiring unauthorised workers. With 11,525 work-based regularisations in 2023, numbers could rise under these revised criteria in 2025.
From Wednesday, non-Europeans visiting or transiting through the UK without a visa must obtain a £10 electronic travel authorisation (ETA). The system, introduced in November 2023, currently applies to select Gulf nationals and will expand to all non-Europeans by April 2.
British and Irish citizens are exempt. ETAs, linked to passports, allow multiple six-month visits over two years or until the passport expires. The Home Office cites enhanced security as the purpose.
In early 2024, over 243,000 ETAs were issued to Gulf nationals. Heathrow Airport criticized the scheme for reducing transfer passenger numbers, urging a review to safeguard competitiveness.
A national survey found that 54% of extreme conservatives support using government violence to stop illegal immigration. The study, conducted in July 2024, revealed that 41% of extreme conservatives also justify vigilante violence, while 52% agree Texas should shoot border-crossers.
Anti-immigrant rhetoric, amplified by Donald Trump and figures like Texas Governor Greg Abbott, fuels such attitudes. Trump’s comparisons of immigration to an invasion and his focus on "bad genes" deepen hostility.
Past rhetoric has inspired tragedies, like the 2019 El Paso shooting. Experts warn that continued violent language in a second Trump presidency could escalate anti-immigrant sentiments and lead to further violence.
