Heartland Visa Proposed to Revitalize U.S. Economies with Skilled Immigrants

United kingdom, United state

America’s mayors have proposed the Heartland Visa to attract skilled immigrants to economically declining regions. The visa aims to redistribute skilled workers, entrepreneurs, and innovators to areas impacted by deindustrialization.

Key features include residency in participating communities, expedited permanent residency for high earners, and quarterly visa allocation based on regional needs. The program targets counties with population declines or slow growth, offering opportunities for skilled immigrants to bolster local economies.

The dual opt-in approach ensures both communities and immigrants benefit. This proposal seeks to balance the distribution of skilled immigration benefits across the U.S., fostering regional development.

Lithuania's Ministry of the Interior has introduced stricter rules for selecting foreign countries where applications for temporary residence permits can be submitted via external service providers. The new criteria consider state security, foreign policy, labour market needs, and institutional capacities.

The Department of Migration will consult with security and police authorities before approving the list of eligible countries. Currently, Türkiye, UAE, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan send the most visitors to Lithuania.

In 2023, 29,739 applications were submitted through external service providers. Recently, Lithuania banned 1,216 foreigners and revoked 1,483 residence permits due to work contract issues.

Canada’s PR Not Guaranteed for International Students Despite Pathways

This year has brought changes to studying in Canada as a foreign student, highlighting that permanent residence (PR) is not guaranteed. Graduates from Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) face multiple hurdles to obtaining PR.

They need work experience, often through a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and must apply for PR programs like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

New prioritization in the Express Entry system favours candidates in specific sectors or with French language skills. International graduates should align their qualifications with in-demand professions and explore provincial programs to increase their PR chances.

Australia's New Visa Policy Increases Costs for Omani Students

The Australian government has raised international student visa fees by 125% from July 1, 2024, now costing US$1,068. Additionally, visitor visa holders and students with temporary graduate visas cannot apply onshore for a student visa.

This fee is higher than those in the US, Canada, and New Zealand. Changes also include shorter Temporary Graduate Visas, reduced age eligibility, and ending 'visa hopping.'

Omani and expatriate students will face higher visa fees, housing costs, and inflation. The impact will likely be seen from the next academic year. However, current applicants might not be heavily affected. Migration to Australia has risen by 60% since September 2023.
